Species Information

General:
Perennial herb from a taproot and stolons; forming mats or clumps up to 50 cm across; stems mostly erect, branched, yellowish stiff-hairy; 8-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lacking; stem leaves opposite, lanceolate to oblong or elliptic, 7-50 mm long, 3-15 mm across, 1-nerved, sharp-pointed to rounded, somewhat hairy; stipules lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 2-10 flowers in an open cluster; petals 5, white, 7-12 mm long, deeply 2-cleft; sepals 5, elliptic to lanceolate, 6-10 mm long, hairy.
Fruits:
Capsules nearly cylindric, 10-14 mm long, 10-valved; seeds reddish-brown, 1-1.5 mm long.

Habitat and Range

Mesic gravelly shores and open slopes in the lowland to alpine zones; rare in SW BC, known from N Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands; amphiberingian, N to AK; E. Asia.
